What’s so awesome about Goldendoodles?

We could take up pages and pages answering that! But to keep it short, Goldendoodles are highly intelligent, easy going, and loyal. They have become famous for their patience and friendliness with children and strangers, and thus have gained much popularity and media attention in recent years and are widely considered to be the perfect family pet. They are social dogs and happiest when with people. Goldendoodles are very agile, make great running companions and love to be outdoors, but (in our experience) they are just as happy to curl up at your feet, or cuddle on the couch. These dogs live to please their owners, have excellent health, fantastic temperaments, and service qualities.

Are Goldendoodles hypo-allergenic?

Goldendoodles are often promoted as being allergy-friendly.

With that said, it is important to point out that no breeder can guarantee that any dog is hypoallergenic. Everyone has different types of allergies (my son for example, is allergic to the fur/dander while I have an allergy to the saliva). Most people with allergies to dogs (roughly 10% of the population) are sensitive to the dander.  In addition to shedding their fur, many dog breeds shed this dander every 3-4 days, thus causing allergies symptoms for those who are sensitive.

The Poodle, and their doodle cousins, shed from their skin approximately every 21 days, which greatly reduces the amount of allergens that could trigger an allergic reaction. If you have allergies it is best to choose a multigene doodle, or an F1B (more on that below) as most allergies are caused by dander and shedding.  An experienced breeder should be able to tell differences between their puppies.

We have had great success in the past placing puppies with those who have allergies. I’m able to tell by 6 - 8 weeks old what type of coat they will have and if it will work with allergies. If you have allergies, please speak with me so that we can help select the right puppy for you. I am pleased to say that we have placed many puppies in allergy-sensitive homes (my own home included!) with 100% success.

Is it true Goldendoodles don’t shed?

Yes and no.

And this is where, as a buyer, I strongly recommend you do your research. The low-shedding allergy-friendly coat comes from the standard poodle. A poodle does not have the plush double coat that many breeds have. Poodles have a single, dense coat of curly hair. Just like human hair, it continues to grow (and requires regular brushing and the occasional haircut). Just like human hair, poodle hair WILL eventually fall out, but drastically less than most other breeds. And especially in the curlier-coated doodles, the lost hair is usually trapped in the coat until the next bath & brush.

Double-coated dogs (which includes the retriever) shed much more than single-coated dogs because, in addition to normal year-round shedding, their undercoats undergo heavy seasonal shedding as well.

A first generation, or F1 doodle, will not have consistent traits between siblings and may lean more towards the poodle parent, or the golden retriever parent. For this reason, an F1 will often have a shedding coat. Be cautious if a breeder of F1 doodles makes the claim “low-shedding”. If low-shedding is important to you, and especially if you have allergies, look for a multigenerational Goldendoodle (F2 or higher) or an F1B (75% poodle, 25% golden retriever).

Furthermore, look for a breeder who does genetic testing on all their parent dogs - like we do! Broadly speaking, shedding in dogs is controlled by 2 genes: MC5R and RSPO2. If you're a science geek like me, you can read more here. All our parents have 2 copies of the F allele (Full Furnishings) and 2 copies of the T allele, meaning that they are as non-shedding as a doodle can be!

Could a Goldendoodle make a good guard dog?

Not really, no. There are a lot of great things about the Goldendoodle, but being a guard dog is not one of them. While you can easily train your doodle to let out a bark when a stranger approaches the house, in our experience, that’s about where it ends.

Once the door is open they will excitedly and happily greet any stranger who approaches. And quite possibly find a way to wriggle up into their arms. If you're looking for a good guard dog to protect your home, this is not your breed.

How do I reserve a Red Ridge Goldendoodle puppy?

In order to ensure we find the right puppy for your family, we like to take a little extra time to get to know you.

The first step is to fill out our application form. We will respond to applications by email and schedule a time to connect over the phone to have a personal interview to get to know you, learn more about your family, previous dog experience and living situation.

Once we have determined we are a good fit for each other then you will be invited to place a $500 non-refundable deposit and be put on the reservation list.

How will you know which puppy is best for my family?

We get to know each and every puppy intimately.

Each puppy has a unique personality, preferences, and temperament which helps guide us toward finding the right family for each puppy – and the right puppy for each family. We take into consideration the needs and preferences of your own family before making a puppy recommendation. In the event that we find more than one good match available for you, you will have the opportunity to select your puppy.

You’ll get to meet all the puppies, including yours after they reach 6 weeks of age.

Can I meet you before placing a deposit?

Absolutely. After you send in your application and we have a phone interview, we can arrange for you to come for a private visit. We don't typically do "open houses" as it can sometimes be stressful for momma. Plus, it gives us an opportunity to get to know you more personally and vice versa!

When can I take my puppy home?

Your puppy will be ready to come home when he/she is eight weeks old.

Are your puppies required to be “fixed”?

Our puppies are sold as family pets, and therefore all puppies are sold on a strict spay/neuter contract unless otherwise arranged prior to being sold. This means that puppy purchasers agree not to breed their puppies and agree to have their puppy spayed/neutered by 6 months of age, and proof of spay / neuter surgery must be submitted to us.

How do I prepare for my puppy’s arrival?

It can be frustrating (and costly!) trying to navigate the big box stores to find the right products in a sea of items.

It doesn’t have to be so tough. We recommend keeping it simple – a sturdy dish for food and water, a crate for sleeping (we are big proponents of crate training) and a small pet bed (choose one that can be machine washed). And that’s really all you need to get started! With each puppy we carefully assemble a package of puppy essentials – a blankie that smells like mom & their littermates, a favourite stuffie or chew toy, a puppy collar and short training leash, a 10-14-day supply of the same top-quality puppy kibble they are raised on.

All you need to do is spend time connecting as a family. Plan to spend some quality time at home with your puppy for the first week or so.

It will help make the transition easier and more enjoyable for both of you!

Do you ship puppies?

Yes, we have shipped puppies all across Canada and the US.

Because of distance, we require to have a Skype interview so I can see around your home and get to know you and ensure we are a good fit for one another.

Can I cross the US border to bring my puppy home?

Yes, you can bring your puppiy across the border.

As of December 2018, the CDC has revised its cross-border requirements and have made it a breeze! All you need is their proof of birth date and vaccination records - under four months of age there is no requirement to have rabies as they are now considered exempt.
